Elena, blue orbs focused exclusively on Arya, didn't even notice that she was in the lead. She was too focused on what she was doing...and in fact, she rather starting to like running. It felt...good. It felt RIGHT. The way the joints and sinewy muscle in her legs worked to propel her forward fast, faster, FAST...
If Elena didn't know better, she would have thought she could fly.
Pure instinct and adrenaline was propelling her. The innate ability to run was occurring to her just like words and ideas sometimes did, as if from some outside source.
She began to get tunnel vision, perception narrowing to a point in front of her, like a cone. A sharp rock cut into her paw pad, but she didn't even feel it.

Whisper, after shaking her head voraciously, could not, for some reason, shake the dizziness that hitting the tree branch had caused. It had caused her to lose her breath, and now, she walked at a trot, coughing every now and then as her lungs stung with new oxygen. Her throat burned, and there looked to be a time where she thought she would have to stop. After plodding forward a few more inches, she stopped completely, hacking and coughing; the slight injury to her throat becoming more and more intolerable the harder she breathed.
Her mouth dipped with slaver, falling in strings from her gaping maw. She stared plaintively at the ground, shaking her head to rid herself of the gnawing sting in her head and throat. After a moment, she finally lifted her head, eyes narrowed on the vanishing figures in front of her. She would not quit. Even if she finished this race in last place, she would cross that finish line. The weary canine plodded on, only pausing to cough a hacking cough. |

(Whisper - 5 Nerah - 10 Elena - 2)
arya couldn't believe how interesting this race was turning out to be - there was a variation of speeds, whisper being the slowest - though she seemed to be speeding up a bit now, and elena being the fastest - though now she was slowing down. nerah was at an average speed, though a huge burst of speed was seeming to overcome the bear-like canine. the order of the race stayed consistent for about a minute (though the speed variation seemed to happen every half minute or so), with elena being in first, nerah in second, and whisper in third. the first and second place positions seemed close, only about three yards apart, but whisper was trailing behind, being only about nine yards ahead of the starting line - arya really hoped she could get a burst of speed, and maybe take the race.

Either her leg was feeling better, or adrenaline made her stop noticing the pain. Either way, Nerah was feeling much better than she had only a moment ago, ad she found herself increasing her speed, quickly gaining on Elena as her legs propelled her body forward. She was sure she had never gone this fast before. She had never had a reason to, aside from hunting, and the trees made it impossible to unleash one's full speed in a hunt, with all the waving through the trees that was required.
Her mood lifted when she saw how close she was getting to first place. It was really looking like she had a chance to win, especially since the feline had seemed to suddenly slow down. The occult canine hoped she was all right.

Now that the adrenaline in Elena's body was slowing to a low burn, she was beginning to feel the pain in her cut paw. Her limp grew more and more pronounced, and though she tried to deny it there was no denying the blood that was now marking her footfalls.
Damn, damn, damn! she thought to herself, And I was going to win this silly race too! Arya would have been so proud...
She looked down again, hoping to see the bleeding slowing down...but alas, the opposite was happening: blood was flowing more and more quickly, and Elena was beginning to feel faint.

Whisper's breath was finally coming back to her...it was about time! After a few more spluttering coughs, the canine began to slowly walk forward once again, then trot. Soon enough, air was filling her lungs freely once again, and her loping trot was turning into a clumsy gallop. Her amber eyes, that were glistening with painful tears mere moments ago, were now glistening with a newly hatched determination.
She began to move with greater ease, taking note of any passing tree-branches with great care, and hope stirred within her. She knew that she was fast; it was one of the only things she was really good at. She didn't need to prove herself in that fashion. She only wanted to, at this point, prove to herself that she could finish what she started. And she was going to finish the race, even if she finished in last place.
[[Thank you, guys. Sorry for the delay. ^_^'']]

Apani found herself yawning, despite the fact this race was rather . . . unique. She was interested, of course, but she did have business to attend to. She turned to Arya, and smiled gracefully, trying to hide her boredom. "I do apologise, Arya," she murmured, her eyes flashing back towards the members of the Cult who were still desperately racing towards the finish, "but I fear that I have unfinished business back at the Cult. A few clients I must attend to, that's all."
With a reassuring smile to her friend, she got up and stretched her legs, letting her claws flex satisfyingly. "When you get back, tell me who won," she muttered to Arya before she began to walk away, feeling a weight lifting from her shoulders. It's not that she didn't enjoy the race - it's just that she had better things to do than sit there and watch relative strangers pushing themselves towards a tree, and most of them failing in that pursuit.

{This is a double round, so your character had the opportunity to get double the distance. Here are the numbers; Whisper – 12 Nerah – 19 Elena – 16}
Arya could not help but watch with unmasked admiration as Nerah began to run fasted and faster, catching up to Elena with an ease; the two were literally side by side, and Arya let a smile glimmer across her face, watching as she remembered why she had fallen in love with Nerah – and though she hated to admit it, Arya had a small parcel of her heart that was totally devoted to the canine, the rest consumed by Elena and The Cult. And watching Nerah run made Arya lust for her, wishing they could create another spectacular child, like Hershey was, together. Still, that envy faded when Arya saw her darling Elena, with her long, sandy cream body and bright blue eyes determined to get ahead. The only one that Arya wasn’t sure of was Whisper – and Arya hoped that she could provide some competition to make the race even more interesting!

Her speed increased. The pain was bit a distant memory. That that existed for the large canine was the race. She pushed herself nearly to the limit, determined to get ahead. She found herself racing side-by-side with Elena. The feline had proven herself to be quite the runner. Nerah was impressed. Still, she wasn't just going to throw the race in the feline's favor. No, she wanted to win, and she was going to give it her all, regardless of what happened between now and the finish.
This is so exciting! Her tail wagged behind her as she ran, practically flying over the ground. I can't wait to tell my packmates all about it! And, hopefully, she would be able to tell them about her exciting win and not her not-so-exciting near-win.

Whisper's speed was quickening, and the two spots of her opponents in front of her seemed to creep closer, which made Whisper feel much better about herself. She was slowly gaining, despite it all; and while it still looked like she would finish the race in last place, she was going to finish it. Maybe it would be nose and nose. Maybe Whisper would hit another tree. Regardless of what happened, Whisper was dead-set to make sure that her finish was a grand one, and if her legs gave out, or she simply stopped breathing, well, her very ghost would flutter over the finish-line before floating up into the afterlife.
Whisper didn't think that was going to happen. She was gaining her confidence back.
Besides...her energy was building back up, and her feet were throwing more dirt clods as they struck the earth with each graceful blow. Was there still a small chance for her?
