Eva.
The name whispered through her brain as consciousness swept through her brain for the very first time.
Eva.
Eva had to get out. She felt suddenly cramped, squashed and uncomfortable, as if the prison that held her was no longer suitable for her needs. She tried to move, her infant body squirming against the constraints of her pod, making it shake and twitch on its branch. A feeling of weightlessness was followed by a sudden unpleasant thud as the pod hit the ground, and unborn Eva recoiled at the noise and mild pain the impact caused. The drop had, however, caused the pod to crack a little, and finally its captive could make some real attempts at escape. She scrabbled with her forepaws, but when that proved ineffective she arched her back against the woody shell, close to the place where it had cracked. It bulged out, but then at last gave way fully, and little Eva was left, lying on her side, gasping for her first breath.
The air, when it came was cold and sharp in her virgin lungs, but it gave her strength. She wriggled out of the remnants of the pod, immediately gathering a coating of dirt that clung to her fluid-covered fur. Fur. Almost startled, Eva twisted herself to look at her own body. She saw four legs, already sturdy, a curly tail, a black, hairy body. She looked up and around her, blinking in the dawn light, and saw that she wasn’t the only being in this place. Other small creatures, some like herself, some shaped differently, and some much larger were scattered under the tall skyward-reaching objects that filled the area. Without knowing why, their presence comforted the newborn.
After lying still for some moments, she rocked onto her belly, and from there, attempted to stand up. Her legs were difficult though, awkward, and she wasn’t quite sure how to place them. A glance at a larger creature nearby and she thought she got the gist. Finally, she felt her body rise from the floor, wobbling but supporting her weight, and she surprised herself by making an excited yipping noise, trying to draw attention to her feat.
