It was quiet and lonely. The world felt empty of life, despite the bright flowers and leaves, and the scurrying prey. Dragonfly hadn't seen as many canines, felines or reptiles as she'd used to see. It was as if they were slowly draining away from the world. It was unnerving. But it was hatching season, when newborns burst out of their pods in the Orchard. She knew it was. She could see it in the blooming flowers and growing saplings. She felt it in the warm days, ready to foster new intelligent life. Even more, she felt it inside. Her internal clock said it was time, and so she went there, searching for someone, anyone new.
Her thoughts turned to Artemis, the reptile she'd last seen in the Orchard. She and Lukasse were leaving with Artemis, but then Artemis had suddenly disappeared, and never came back. Why did she disappear? How? Why and how did anyone disappear? She'd never encountered the same person twice, except for the friends she'd traveled with. Did everyone just wander off, farther than she'd ever dared to go? If that was so, maybe it was good that they'd not gone so far out, despite the way her wandering heart hated it.
The Orchard was strangely quiet. It was disturbing and upsetting, even scary. She neither saw nor heard any newborns, nor even any broken pods. Was something wrong? The trees were growing pods. Were they just not falling? Were they empty? She walked up to an Annab tree and stood underneath a pod, looking up at it with worry.

She woke up that morning feeling restless, and had turned just in time to see her companion leave the nest the trio had made. Curious about where she was going, Lukasse had followed. She kept silent – not because she was wanting to remain hidden but because she didn’t really have anything positive to say. The large, silvery reptile was worried, and just couldn’t place why. It was true the world was eerily quiet, but that alone wouldn’t be the cause, would it?
The two ended up traveling back to the orchard, and she looked around at the trees. That was weird…where were all the pods? Was everything okay in here? This place used to be so full of life, didn’t it? Or had she merely dreamt that?
Dragonfly stood underneath the Annab tree and looked up. Lukasse followed her gaze, frowning at the pod. It was good that the thing existed, but it was so…still…
“Maybe we just came right before the start of the new birthing season?” she offered hopefully. She wasn’t sure if she believed it, but she desperately wanted to. Maybe they were worrying over nothing. The world couldn’t be dying on them already, could it? If it was…what would happen to them?

Dragonfly turned at Lukasse's words. Maybe... They were hopeful, positive words that she would've liked to believe. But she didn't think that was it. She knew it was birthing season, everything except for the lack of pods said so. She even knew it was in the middle of the time when new life fell from the trees and stumbled around in confusion. Even if it came later this year, for some reason, she knew she should've been seeing something.
"Maybe, but... It's already later on in the season, the pods should've been dropping for some time by now. Why would it come late?" Why wouldn't it come at all?
She suddenly thought about touching the pod and learning if it was hollow. It was a random idea, but she wanted to. The reptile felt she needed to know what was going on. But what if it wasn't hollow, and instead she ended up hurting the newborn inside? She didn't want that. No, the pods probably weren't empty, or they'd have fallen on the ground, empty. Something else had to have happened to them. Was it the trees, maybe? Or... Or... Fear began to creep into her heart. What was it? Was it fixable? And what if it wasn't? What if this lifelessness continued? What then?

Dragonfly turned to her and seemed to be thinking about something. She wished she knew what else to say or do to make things better, but everything seemed to be…off this year. There was so much that any creature could do in this world, but encouraging pods to grow from the trees wasn’t in that list. Or, if it was, she certainly didn’t know how. They’d just have to trust nature to take its course, at least until they learned a bit more. How would one go about learning this type of thing, though?
Dragonfly then responded, saying it was late in the season and things hadn’t started yet. She asked why, and Lukasse shook her head. She didn’t know, but she sorely wished she did.
With a sigh, Lukasse rested against the nearest tree, staring around at the pods. They needed help…another thing she didn’t know how to ask for. What could they do but wait?
“Maybe we missed some of the births?” she offered hopefully. “I don’t know…maybe things are just being switched up this year and we’re worrying over nothing. I wish I knew how to look into things and see for sure.”
