((This post is open to roleplay in, but its primary purpose was to help me increase Nerah's rank in her group. ^.^ Nothing anyone else has to worry about.))
Nerah padded along through the forest, weaving around the trees with head and tail held high. For the first time in forever, she felt full of energy. Life was returning to the orchard, and she’d already been lucky enough to meet one of the new creatures! Maybe this time there’d be enough newborns to fill the world. She hoped so – she wanted adventures and friends. Perhaps she’d get some of both before things quieted down again. In the meantime, though, her pack – her friends and child and friends’ children – all needed to eat, and that meant finding a decent amount of food. Taking down an elk or two would be the way to go, but those were fairly rare in this area. There were the birds she and Silva had hunted on their first visit to the woods, though. They were small and the pack would require several, but it was better than going after rodents and safer than trying her luck with the snakes. Antares knew how to heal, but it was better if she kept from getting poisoned in the first place.
The scent of a broken egg alerted her to a nest nearby and she stopped, sniffing the ground. Eggs meant birds were nearby. She crouched down and waited, keeping as still as possible until she could see one of the living clumps of feathers browsing around near some tree roots. She continued to watch, letting it think it was safe. She needed to draw out more of its flock so she could bring back a feast for everyone!
Eventually, more of the birds appeared. Nerah continued to wait only until there were more than she could count. Then, she charged forward, snapping at necks as soon as she was within reach and tossing the dead birds out of her way to collect when her hunt was over. Most of the birds got away – they usually did, and they usually should – but she managed to kill two adults and two juveniles before the survivors disappeared. Her job now almost done, Nerah turned back and collected her kills. She then padded home, tail wagging as she went.
