Darkness was such a nice thing. It was the only thing, really, as far as Garnet was concerned, since she had seen nothing else in her as yet unstarted life. It was cool and moist inside her pod, and she was content to simply curl there and rest, sometimes thinking and imagining that there must be, somehow, more, but unable to fully envision it as all she knew was the inky darkness of inside. How she even knew that her name was Garnet was beyond her, but it seemed right somehow. It was what she was to be called, although at present she could see no rhyme or reason for it. Well, at present she couldn't really see anything.
Just as she was about to nap once more, her pod fell from the tree, striking the ground. Stunned by the sudden motion, it wasn't until she found it hard to breathe that she struck out with her more powerful hind legs in an attempt to free herself from her prison that had, until now, been a sanctuary. How the nature of it had changed so rapidly she had no idea, but soon she had broke through and could taste the sweetness of fresh air as it filled her lungs. Finally pulling herself completely from the shell, she flopped onto the grass, eyes clenched shut at the bright light outside. She was moist from the nutrients inside her egg, but quickly drying, her feathers fluffing.
The sun was warm on her dark skin, and she was rapidly heating up, her dark coloration drawing in the heat much like a dark car. It was nice at first, but then forced her to open her eyes and scramble awkwardly to her feet. Her short forearms pinwheeled as she attempted to keep her balance, made all the harder by all the bright colors and things around her. She remembered herself a moment later and what she was about to do when her skin ached a little from the warmth. Sunning herself would be a necessity, but at the same time, there was a limit, apparently. She managed to take a few unsteady, clumsy steps before falling face first into a slightly shadier area.
Now that the sun wasn't directly on her, she felt much better. Except for the empty feeling in her stomach, but she had no idea what to do about that. As of yet, her instincts were not speaking to her about that sensation. As far as she was concerned, she was the only creature in existence, for she had never met anyone else and saw no one at the moment. She wasn't lonely, because she didn't know there was such a thing as company. She was hungry, but had no name for that feeling, and no idea how to stop it.
Just as her stomach growled for the first time, though, a mouse poked it's nose from the grass. It would be a mistake, as even as clumsy as she was as a newborn, it was so close that she easily lashed out at it, grabbing it in her fangs and killing it. She ate hungrily, with no idea that others were nearby.
