A light breeze ruffled Nerah’s multi-colored fur as she raced across the hills, leaping over the smaller gouges and dips in her path and teleporting across the ones that were too far for her to make it across the mundane way. After spending so much time more or less confined to her pack’s territory, it felt good to be out and about, exploring lands she had not yet had a chance to see. The world was a vast place, it seemed, but she had made it one of her goals early in life to see every bit of it she could.
The large canine stopped at the top of one of the larger hills and sat down, taking in the landscape around her. Her home would always be the maple forest, but this area was easily habitable. There were plenty of places to make shelter, grazing animals to prey on, and plenty of space to stretch one’s legs. She’d consider spending a few nights here herself if she didn’t have a little girl back home to worry about.
It seems so empty. I wonder if anyone else has ever even been here…

arya;; i wanna be next to you black and gold She felt new. Her fur was clean, clean beyond the way water or her tongue could change it. Clean the way only new fur could be. Oh, how she loved that fur. It was soft, as soft as down feathers of a young bird, and she adored pressing her nose into the sweet-smelling fur of her chest, just to assure herself that it was still there. She had seen her reflection in a puddle along her way here, and for the first time, she had felt very…pretty. Beautiful, even. Change was good, she decided. She paused for a moment, brushing the side of her face against the black sock of her right foreleg in a very feline manner. She was the perfect mix of black and white and silver and gray, and every shade in between. She adored it.
Stretching backwards, Arya’s back crackled before she began to move again, careful not to ruin her new fur, not just yet. Her ears tipped forward as her eyes blurred. She slipped them closed – they were a lovely scarlet color now, if she recalled correctly. It was a vision. She could tell by the aching of her head, the prickling of her spine. Flashes of cream and sand and chocolate fur, nothing she could make out with the nature of her specialty. She sighed, opened her eyes, and began to move again, trotting happily across the hills an wondering in the back of her head what the vision meant.
Then she heard the footsteps. Faint and distant, but footsteps that were quickly approaching. She yipped three times to make her presence known before continuing towards the direction of the footsteps, curiosity getting the better of her.

Fully rested, Nerah continued her trek, looking around as she explored and attempting to commit each detail to memory. As she traveled, a shape caught her attention, indistinct at first but then at least clear enough for her to tell it was a creature. She bounded ahead, wondering who else had chosen to come here. It was a black and white canine she didn’t recognize. Maybe one of the new creatures from the orchard? She hadn’t been there yet this year, but she knew the pods but ready or at least close to it by now. Perhaps after here she should make her way to the orchard. She and Silva had made a point of greeting as many new arrivals as they could last year and that had been fun. Why would this year be different?
The creature yipped and Nerah stopped, her heart aching at the sound. She knew that voice! But…those weren’t Arya’s colors. On a closer look, though, she recognized the shape of the only creature she had ever loved. Well, in a non-family sense, anyway. Then she caught a whiff of the creature’s scent.
There was no mistaking that smell.
“Arya!” Nerah’s tail wagged and she resumed her walk, nearing the other canine. “It’s been too long.”
