Kayalee raised her aching body from its sleeping position, she had curled herself tightly in a ball next to one of the only trees on the entire plain. It had been months since she had seen any action at all, whether it be hunting or even just exploring. She heard the croaking caw of her raven, Carren. He settled himself neatly on her shoulder and cawed once more, pecking at Kayalee's ear. "I know, my dearest pet, I am also bored of this silence on the plains. Remember though, silence is better than war." Kayalee sighed, resignedly. She stretched herself in a cat-like way then straightened herself to a slightly less awkward standing position and turned her head slightly to look Carren in the eye. "I think it is time we hunt for our tribe, my dear." The old she-cat meowed, her aqua blue eyes shimmering in anticipation. Carren cawed with delight and soared above his mistress, ready to seek out whatever unlucky creature lie in their path. - -Tomorrow's a Mystery - - [/blockquote]

River leaped onto a patch of grass and then growled in frustration as the rat she’d been stalking squeezed out of her grip and dashed into a nearby hole. That was the fifth one she had lost today! If not for the fact that she was catching other creatures at her usual rate she’d think she’d lost her touch. Unfortunately, rats had been all she’d been able to spot today. Everything else was either sleeping or hiding.
Well, whatever. She’d catch something eventually.
She padded away from the patch of grass, deciding to try again elsewhere. She had only traveled a few bounds when she noticed her tribe leader. Curious, she made her way over.

Kayalee was about to set off when she heard the heavy padding of paws coming her way. Carren swooped towards the shadowy character and gave a caw. Kayalee turned quickly, making herself dizzy since she hadn't been up for long enough for such fast movements. "Ah, River, would you enjoy a hunt with Carren and myself? The absconding feline inquired, "I suppose that we are on a search for a herd of elk, especially if you come along, it will be much simpler with two than with one." Carren gave an indignant caw, and turned to face her mistress. "No, dear, I did not forget about you, you're just not large enough to take down one of those elk. Kayalee sighed, "You can, however, distract them quite nicely." She turned her attention back to River. "Well, what do you say?" Kayalee asked, her eyes once again shimmering. - -Tomorrow's a Mystery - - [/blockquote]

River nodded to Kayalee and her companion as she approached and listened as the tribe leader spoke. “Of course.” She stretched. “It’s been too long since I’ve hunted prey larger than my head.” And a good group hunt was way overdue, even if the group was just the two – well, three – of them. She nodded in the direction from which she had come. “That way’s empty of everything but rats, and I think I may have scared most of them into hiding. Have you been hunting long? Where did you search?” If they could narrow down their options, it’d be easier to track down their first – and only, if they were lucky – target and start the chase.

Kayalee thought for a moment, her head tilted slightly to the side. "I assume the southern river would be the best place to start, as it's summer and that's the coolest place to be found, unfortunately." Kayalee meowed, turning her head to look over at the expanse of grass, a worried expression crossed the feline's face. It hasn't rained in days, If a fire starts it'll be deadly.... Kayalee thought, then turned her attention back to her tribe mate. "Well, if you're ready I guess now is as good a time as ever." Kayalee purred, her face still slightly stricken with worry. Kayalee turned herself towards the south and began the long trek to the river. Carren cawed and lighted on Kayalee's shoulder and began preening his feathers. "Hopefully they're to tired from this infernal heat to move to fast, I'm not in the mood for a really long chase." Kayalee grumbled half to herself. - -Tomorrow's a Mystery - - [/blockquote]

((Sorry for cutting out earlier. Storms knocked me offline suddenly.))
River nodded, blinking at Kayalee’s expression. “At least we have plenty of shade in the camp, and the river hasn’t gone dry.” Yet. Was that what Kayalee was worrying over? Or was it the lack of prey compared to the other seasons. “If we don’t find prey there, we could always try beyond our borders. The territory between here and the forest is unoccupied, so we wouldn’t be stealing, and I bet the River Garden’s tempted some of the herds.”
She nodded again when Kayalee suggested they move and followed her to the river. Her ears flicked as the tribe leader spoke again. “If you like, I could sneak around the herd and you could startle them toward me. That’d be a shorter run than trying to exhaust our target. Or if you’d rather switch roles…” Kayalee was leader, after all. She had the right to pick whatever role she wanted.

Kayalee sighed quietly. "It's not that which is worrying me, I'm worried about the impending harsh summer and the fact that the lack of rain may cause a harsh fire to our home." She lashed her tail, and looked up to the sparse coverage of clouds in the sky. "No use worrying." Kayalee muttered to herself and Carren, who cawed. Kayalee's ears perked upwards and her eyes brightened once again. "I would very much enjoy startling them, I need to work on my scaring." Kayalee replied with a slight snort. Kayalee paused and sniffed. "There's a smallish herd on the other side of the river." She meowed. "Are you ready to start the hunt?" Kayalee mused to Carren and River. Carren cawed and fluttered up to the sky and circled high above the herd. - -Tomorrow's a Mystery - - [/blockquote]

River nodded, understanding. “That…is a valid concern. Maybe we should look into figuring out a way to keep the grass near the camp reasonably damp. Then we might not have to worry about fire.” As for how…she had a few ideas, but they all involved a lot of work and weren’t as effective as she’d like. If they could tolerate their old underground den, it wouldn’t be as much of a problem – they could just move most of their camp there and wait out the dry spell.
River let out an amused purr when Kayalee answered her and nodded at the mention of the herd. “I’ll go get into position…” She circled the herd, keeping some distance from them until she found a clump of tall grass to hide in. She then watched and waited, preparing to pounce the moment their prey was in range.

Kayalee tilted her head. "Staying underground might be a good idea, but with our size and our aversion to being underground or in caves it could be a little rough for us." Kayalee reasoned. "But it's better we talk about this later." Kayalee ended the subject and leaned towards the prey which was so close, her paws itched to pounce and tear at the hides of the elk. Kayalee waited for what seemed like ages as the black and white feline circled carefully around the herd and got into position. She waited a few more moments but River didn't move. She crept closer to the herd, making sure to get into the correct position to at least scare one in the right direction. She then bounded forward, scattering the herd and hoping one would move close enough to River for the hunt to really begin. - -Tomorrow's a Mystery - - [/blockquote]

River studied the herd, trying to determine which individual would make the best target. There were a few possibilities, which she was able to narrow down by disregarding the young fawns. The tribe may be small, but all three members were fully evolved so one of the adults or larger fawns would be needed. They’d only have time to catch one – maybe two – deer before the whole herd ran out of reach, so they had to make sure the first kill would be adequate.
River made a mental note of her preferred targets – a mostly-grown fawn, a middle-aged doe with an unsteady gait, and a young doe that seemed to be missing an eye – and waited for Kayalee to make her move. She didn’t have to wait long – a flash of gray and the herd was on the move. Of the three she’d decided on, the half-blind doe came closest, so she pounced, sinking her claws into the deer’s flank and clamping her jaws down on its neck, intending to crush the spine.
