A tickling sensation along her nose made her sneeze, bringing her fully out of sleep. She hadn’t been aware of sleeping, or of anything until that point, but now she could feel, see, taste, and think. A moment later, it occurred to her she could smell and hear as well, though those sensations were muffled. She could smell only herself and the pod that surrounded her, and hear only the loudest of noises outside, reduced to a faint mumble by the pod’s thick walls.
Tiny, clawed hands reached out to prod at the feathery thing that had tickled her. At the same time, something pricked the end of her tail lightly. She realized after a moment the two things were connected. The feathery thing – her tail – was connected to her, curled under her so that the feathers brushed against her muzzle with every twitch or swish. She stared at her tail, following its length down until she noticed a pair of long legs, clawed much like her arms. Her toes twitched and she recognized the legs as also belonging to her.
As she pondered herself, it dawned at her that the pod was cramped. Every moment tickled, thanks to the long feathers that adorned her. It had been comfortable until now – hadn’t it? – but it was getting cramped.
The pod must have agreed with her. A loud snap, a sensation of movement, and a flash of light announced that the pod had fallen and cracked. The tree had given her what it could, but now it was time to venture out into the world.
Was she ready?
Well…she couldn’t stay here. She’d be smooshed!
A tentative arm reached out for the crack in the pod and pushed down, ripping a larger hole from which she peeked. Large yellow eyes blinked at the wide world beyond the safety of the pod – the trees, the sky, the tiny creatures scurrying about…it was overwhelming.
Could she really do this?
She took a deep breath and struggled into the world before she could change her mind. She fell face first onto the ground as soon as she was free of the pod, startling a rodent that had been digging at something in the ground just an inch or two away from where her face hit. The rodent started her as well, and she leaped back toward the tree with a shriek, watching it warily.
She was out…but now what? What was she supposed to do about the dangers of the world?
