It wasn't quite dawn yet when the young inhabitant of a ripe pod grew aware of his consciousness. This had been occurring more and more frequently, for longer periods of time and with growing intensity. He was able to string together connecting thoughts now, instead of just the constant, vague feelings of warmth and security he experienced in his small world. He even had names for things! Mostly things he could feel, like his toes and tail and nose that were all pressed against the warm, comforting walls of his universe. This started when he discovered he could move these different things sprouting from his body. This was his first moment of clarity, a brief and fleeting moment where he grew aware of himself, but hadn't quite discovered what he was. The inhabitant of the pod still wasn't quite sure of what he was, but he had a bigger understanding of what it was. He was not worried. Somehow he knew that he would find out soon enough, and had a vague idea that something would happen soon that would make his toes and his tail and his nose make sense.
The podling began to vibrate from his chest (purring, that's what it was called, he was purring), and the small vibrations caused the already strained stem of his pod to crack and... PLOP. The pod, along with its contents, dropped to the ground. It wasn't too far of a fall, as the pod had been hanging on a very far-reaching end of a branch and the weight had caused it to dip close to the ground. The podling was quite shaken, but no worse for wear. He had stopped purring, and became aware that something - aside from the sudden drop - had changed. There was....light? A small hole had been ripped at the top of his pod where the stem had been, and the smallest ray of light had filtered through. He was curious; where had it come from?
The podling tried to reach for it, extending his toes and tail and nose, and for the first time ever since he had grown aware of himself, he felt that the closeness of his universe was constricting. He purred again - no, (no, it wasn't purring this time it was meaner this was growling), he growled, and fought against the walls of his universe. He was moving towards the light, the small pinprick that had opened up and continued to open further. The pod slowly peeled away and his head broke through the hole, greeting the dawn light. He blinked and continued to struggle, freeing his left paw from the pod and placing it on the dirt below him. This small triumph encouraged the podling and made his movements much more fervent. Once he dislodged himself completely, he stumbled over, his legs unsteady. So this is what my toes look like, He thought, gazing down at his feet, hesitant to rise again. He continued to look at his new body, delighted by the warm oranges and reds that made up his pelt. So vibrant! His fur was sticky and wild, still wet with the membrane that had coated the walls of his first universe.
The new creature was delighted! He inspected his body, poking and feeling and sniffing, flexing every muscle he could and thrashing his tail back and fourth. How amazing! He leaped to his feet and gazed about wildly, taking in his new, much larger universe. His eyes settled on the distant horizon, just as the sun was peeking above it to wash the orchard in warm, golden light. The podling was frozen, awe-struck as he watched the sun rise. What was this new place? What was he and how did he come about this place? How had he come about at all? The newborn feline was suddenly very scared as he regarded his new world. Shrinking in on himself, he tucked his head back to his belly as he had been in his pod, brows knitted together in worry. Who am I? What am I? He thought over and over again, his breath now shallow and quick. Questions raced around and around in his head. But then....
A sudden feeling of clarity washed over the newborn. He unfurrowed his brown, raised his head. "I am Apollo," He said with a soft and hoarse voice. It was definitive, that that was who he was, it was his name, just like his toes were toes and his nose was nose. He was Apollo.
