Today’s been good.
Seraphi lounged on one of the rocks overhanging the stream near the pack den, letting the sun dry her fur after spending a good portion of the day swimming between the cave and the lake. As a newborn, she could never have managed being so active for so long, but all the time spent walking, learning to hunt for herself, swimming…all the physical activity had strengthened her muscles and increased her stamina more than she ever thought possible. She was still shaky on her paws – that wasn’t likely to ever go away – but she was stronger now and could keep up with everyone as easily as any aboriginal. Shew as glad all the effort paid off – she could see how her packmates had worried for her. Now, they wouldn’t have to.
Movement in the water caught her eye, and she looked to see a small creature – a glider – struggling in the stream. Without thinking, she dropped into the water and swam to the creature, grabbing it gently in her jaws and depositing it on the rock where she had been laying. The creature curled up, trembling, and made no move to get away from her, despite her being a predator. Perhaps it could sense that it was safe with her. She wasn’t hungry, so she wasn’t about to kill the creature, and she’d never kill something she’d saved, anyway.
She sniffed the creature, and it sniffed her right back. She giggled. It was so cute! She’d never interacted with a glider before, except to hunt them. Now…she was never going to be able to kill one again, she knew. They’d all remind her of this one.
Sure now that the glider would be okay, she padded toward the den, shaking the water from her fur. She managed maybe two steps after that when she felt a light tug on her tail and turned to see the glider climbing her, scrambling up the tail and across her back and settling on her shoulders just out of view.
“You want to come with me?” She blinked, but shrugged – lightly, because of her passenger – and continued on. “All right, then. I’m not going to say no to company!” Daddy had his own companion and seemed to have a deep bond with it. Perhaps she could have the same with this glider.
…If she could keep it safe…
