Seraphi gazed down into the canyon from the ledge, shaking more than normal as she judged how deep the gorge was at that particular spot. A fall all the way down there would not be pleasant.
Well, she would just have to be careful.
Seraphi padded down the canyon, taking the easiest route she could find. It was still difficult, involving the occasional leap over a gap or climb up a steep cliff. Somehow, she managed without too much difficulty. She had heard of creatures that took more dangerous routes through here as easily as walking along level ground. She couldn’t imagine ever being that athletic, but did she really need to be?
The glider she had befriended clutched her shoulder fur screeching at every leap. It seemed the glider shared her fear of falling. She- the glider – was part of a tree-dwelling species, but Seraphi guessed she was in the river before because she had fallen from a tree. That would certainly be a traumatic enough experience to instill such a fear…
“Shadow?” She sniffed, scenting her brother. It was a faint scent - maybe a few days or a week old – but it was leading somewhere definite. Curious, she followed it, crossing several more gaps and climbing own a short ledge before seeing an irregularity in the rock ahead. The irregularity ended up being a tunnel leading inside a cliff, and she paused at the entrance.
“What do you think, Almond? Should we go in?”
Almond didn’t reply. Of course she wouldn’t. She didn’t understand any words, yet. Seraphi took a deep breath and headed into the tunnel, anyway. If her brother had been here, it must be safe. She knew for a fact he was still alive and well.
The tunnel was dark, but straight for part of the way through. When it seemed to end, Seraphi followed the scent down another tunnel until it emptied into a cave with an underground lake.
Wow… She looked around as she padded toward the water, taking a quick drink. It tasted odd, but not bad, and refreshed her more than she thought it could. Her brother had definitely been over here, with another creature she didn’t recognize. She wondered who it had been. Well, she’d have to ask later. For now…this place was astounding! There was a feeling she got here that was beyond description. It felt like she was being watched over, protected, but there was an…other to the feeling that nearly overshadowed it.
Without a doubt, there was something special about this place. She would have to visit it often, and then maybe she could figure out what it was she was feeling, here.
