Fennel wasn't looking forward to his task at all. In fact, he was beginning to doubt his decision to embrace the Cult. When he first joined, it did seem like a good idea. They were all friendly, they had assured him. They didn't really discriminate against males. Only Apani did that.

The canine grumbled to himself as he walked along the river bank. "Stupid hunting," he muttered. Hunting was his least favorite activity in the world. Even if he managed to catch prey (which was quite a rare occurrence), he couldn't quite bring himself to destroy its life. He had to remind himself each time that if this small prey didn't die, then he and his friends would, and even then, he had to perform a small ritual at the death of every animal that he brought down.

Worry about that later, he commanded himself. Fennel first had to use all his concentration to actually find and not scare away any living thing he saw. It was difficult. I'm just not cut out to be a hunter.

Fortunately, (or was it unfortunately?) he had been assigned a partner for this particular task. Oggie, they said his name was. A friendly male canine, was Oggie, and he and Fennel would get along. That was all they told him. Fennel was skeptical, but he could only wait and hope for the best.
